An excerpt about the artist:
In 1973, Steven Kolodny earned a BFA (with concentrations in Sculpture and in Jewelry Making) from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh. In 1975, he founded Kolodny Designs, in the state of New York. He creates jewelry that is entirely made by hand and works as a designer, a goldsmith, and a stone cutter (who frequently cuts his own stones). His jewelry is primarily made out of 14k and 18k gold, but is occasionally made of sterling silver. Kolodny’s creations utilize several unusual combinations of gemstones, pearls, or fossils. Whenever possible, he visits fossil quarries, mineral deposits, and mining operation and collects rare and unusual fossil specimens ‘to be used in the creations of his jewelry’. Kolodny is a graduate gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America (1979), a member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths (since 1982), and has taught ‘Jewelry Making’ at SUNY Albany (in 1985). His work is featured in books, such as ‘Art Jewelry Today’, ‘Showcase 500 Art Necklaces’, and ‘Mastering Contemporary Art Jewelry Design’. The jewelry-making technique that was used for the piece that is in this listing, called Hollow Shell Construction, is also described in the books. Kolodny has shown his work at the New York State Museum, the Smithsonian, and major art and jewelry shows throughout the United States.
Around 1980, Steven Kolodny was joined by a partner named Susan M. Gallagher. Together, Kolodny and Gallagher created unique and one-of-a-kind jewelry, for many years. Susan Gallagher retired in the early 2000s.
